Abstract

Heavy input agriculture has been shown to have a negative impact on the environment. The shift towards sustainable agriculture such as organic farming is an important thing to do. With the various programs carried out, farmers are slowly starting to use organic inputs as a substitute for their production inputs. The aims of this research are (1). describe the behavior of farmers in organic farming in Tidore, (2). Describe the interest and behavior of farmers in organic farming, and (3) determine the effect of interest, age, education, and experience on organic farming behavior in farmers. This study was designed as a quantitative study with a survey approach. The sample of this study was 74 vegetable farmers in Tidore who were taken by multistage random sampling. Data analysis using descriptive statistics and inferential. The results showed; In general, farmers in cultivation mostly plant corn, chilies, tomatoes and eggplants. The cultivation system used was 91.9 percent monoculture and 8.1 percent with intercropping. Farmers have started to use organic inputs in agricultural cultivation. Although not 100 percent of organic inputs, but as a start to apply some organic inputs in his farming business. Organic fertilizers are commonly used by farmers as a substitute for chemical fertilizers in the form of drum fertilizer or compost from making their own or buying them. On average, farmers substitute non-organic inputs with organic inputs at a proportion of 50 percent. Farmers' interest and experience in farming have a significant influence on the behavior of implementing organic agricultural inputs. Keywords — organic farming, substitution, interest and behavior
